To start off 2012, Tiger Woods made the trip to Abu Dhabi where he opened round one with a bogey-free 70.

Again, it was the putting game that was the proverbial monkey on Tiger’s back. He needed 34 putts to complete the round despite playing well in all other areas of the game.

After the first hole, in which he went from the rough to a bunker, Woods did not miss a single green in regulation. He hit 17 of 18 greens and 10 of 14 fairways. Although he did not hit any bogeys, he was unfortunately in a group with Rory McIlroy.

McIlroy didn’t hit the ball as well as Tiger, but it was his short game that got him seven birdies to put him in a tie for the first-round lead with Robert Karlsson at a 5-under-par 67.

This Abu Dhabi Championship is Woods’ first and his first time opening a season outside of the United States.
