Rickie Fowlers Gets First PGA Tour Win

It took him 67 starts as a pro, but 23-year-old Rickie Fowler grabbed his first PGA Tour win at the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday.

There was a three-way playoff between Fowler, D.A. Points and U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. It took a perfect 18th hole and a birdie in the extra hole for Fowler to come out with the win. It was both Fowler and McIlroy who recovered from late bogeys to get into the playoff and Points who got his first bogey in 40 straight holes that led him to the playoff.

The matchup between McIlroy and Fowler could be a look into the future as both are just 23 years old and McIlroy is already the number one player in the world.

The win earned Fowler $1.17 million, but even better was the first win for him on the tour and a shot at getting to the Tour Championship and potentially another spot on the Ryder Cup team. It took him two and a half years to get this win.

As the shift in golf moves from Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, this could be a rivalry in the making and worth watching for many years should McIlroy continue his great play and Fowler use this win as a stepping stone into the future.
