Maria Sharapova is going to take on the same woman that beat her in last year’s Wimbledon final, Petra Kvitova, in the Australian Open semifinals.

Sharapova easily handled Ekaterina Makarova while Kvitova beat out Sara Errani. While Kvitova won last year’s Wimbledon (her first Grand Slam title), Sharapova hasn’t won a major title since the 2008 Australian open.

With Caroline Wozniacki losing to Kim Clijsters on Monday, Sharapova and Kvitova also have a shot at claiming the top ranking. However, it won’t come easy for either of the competitors as Sharapova who is still on the long journey back from a shoulder injury and Kvitova had to come back in her quarterfinal match.

In order for either one to claim the top rank, Sharapova will have to win the Australian Open as she did in 2008 while Kvitova would have to match or better the success of Victoria Azarenka, who is also in the running for the number one spot.

While Sharapova and Kvitova match-up, Clijsters and Azarenka will go at it to determine who plays in the finals at Melbourne Park.
