Baseball is a highly popular game that is played in Canada, Japan, and the USA. The sport originated nearly 300 years ago. The peak of professional Baseball is the World Series of Baseball. North American teams take part in the World Series to determine the best Baseball team in the world. These 5 rules in Baseball will assist you in playing and enjoying the game.

The Top 5 Rules in Baseball

1. The primary aim of Baseball

Describing the primary aim of the game is the first in our list of the 5 rules in Baseball. The game's purpose is not very complicated. It is to get more runs than your opposite team. The batter has to strike the ball the farthest he can to score a run, which the pitcher throws at him. Then the batter has to run to all four bases to get a run for his team. To gain victory, one team should outscore their opponents over the duration of nine innings. After the completion of those innings, the team with the highest runs is declared the victor. In the event of a tie, more innings are played. The innings continue till a victor is found.

2. Players and Equipment

Among the top 5 rules in Baseball, this is a major one. Two teams take part in a baseball game. Both teams have 9 players each. Every game takes place for nine innings. In each innings, the teams alternate between batting and fielding. A cumulative score at the end of all the nine innings sums up the tally of both teams. The team that scores the highest runs gains victory. There are three outs per inning for both teams. The outs are applicable for the team that bats. All the innings are defined as the top innings or the bottom innings. The away team always bats at the top innings. At the same time, the home team is given the slot of the bottom innings to complete its batting. Two sections divide the playing field. These sections are called the infield and the outfield. A diamond shape separates the outfield and the infield. All the bases have a distance of 90 feet between them.

At the center of the infield lies the pitching mound. The pitcher has to stand on the mound and then throw the ball towards the batter. At the home plate, the batter takes guard. The name of the other bases is first base, second base, and third base, respectively. A batter should get to all the bases one by one to obtain a run for his team. The bats are constructed out of wood, metal, or aluminum. The ball is approximately three inches across in diameter. It has red stitching in the middle and is colored white. The fielders in the other team wear mitts, which are oversized gloves. The gloves help the fielding team to catch and pick up the ball. Behind the batter, the catcher takes position. His job is to catch any balls that are missed by the batter. It is considered a dangerous position to stand in. The deliveries are pitched at high speeds, and the batter hinders the visual of the ball for the catcher. So, the catcher wears extra padded gloves, leg guards, a body pad, and a helmet.

3. Scoring

Every batter should strike the ball cleanly into the designated fielding area. Following that, he has to cover all four bases. The process of covering all the bases has to be done before he gets out. He can get out if the fielding team gets him out before he has touched the base. A batter may stop at any base that he wishes to. The batter stays on a base when they think that he may not reach the next base and may get run out by the fielding side. If any batter hits a home run, they directly score a mandatory point. A home run indicates that the ball is no more in the playing area in the section of the designated fielding area. So, it can be said that a home run happens when the ball is struck to the crowds within the designated fielding area.

From one hit, the batter may get several runs. This happens when there is more than one player on the bases. Also, the bases are said to be loaded when there is a batter positioned on every base. If any batter hits a home run in this situation, the batting team gets four runs. Also, the batting team may run and score four runs even if there is no home run hit. A batter may get to first base after hitting the ball. Then the batters on the other bases can move to their next base or home base. Every time a batter covers all the bases and returns to home base, the batting side is credited with a run. So, the more batters that get to home plate successfully, the more runs scored by the batting side.

4. Runner

The batter turns into a runner in some particular situations according to the 5 rules in Baseball.

1. The batter strikes the pitch into fair territory and then runs to first base.

2. The batter is allowed to take a walk after four balls by the pitcher.

3. Delivery by the pitcher hits the batter on the body.

4. The catcher accidentally drops the third strike delivery by the pitcher.

It may also happen that there is a wild pitch or the ball is overthrown. Then a batter can attempt to run to his immediate base. A batter can also overrun the first base. This usually happens when the batter hits the pitch to the long field. After they pass first base, the batters turn out of bounds. The runners may not overrun any of the other bases in the game. They are given out if the fielding side tags them in their attempt to steal a base.

5. Dismissing Players

According to the 5 rules in Baseball, batters are out if:

1. They hit the delivery, and the fielder catches it while the ball is in the air. This is termed a fly ball. Even if the ball is caught in foul territory, the catch is considered to be valid.

2. The batters get three strikes.

Runners are declared dismissed if:

1. The runners are hit by a batted ball when they are off base.

2. Any fielder tags the runner with the ball when he is not on any base.

3. The runner runs away more than 3 feet from the baseline to avoid being tagged.

4. Any fielder with the ball touches a base before the runner reaches it.

5. The runners go past another team member who had batted ahead of him.

6. Double play – Two players get out on the same play.

7. Triple play – Three players get out on the same play.

8. Force play - Runners are deemed to be out if a fielder touches them with the ball before reaching the base. This also happens when any fielder touches the base with a ball towards which a runner was heading.

9. Steal – This happens when players try to get to the next base without the batter hitting the ball. The runner typically attempts this before the pitch is delivered. The runner is dismissed if any fielder tags him before he gets to the base.

 10. Tagging up – A fielder can catch a fly ball. No runner can try to leave a base till the ball gets to the fielder. Runners can try to leave the base too early. Then, the runner will have to return to the base and touch it. Only then are they allowed to run to the next base. A runner is dismissed if the ball comes back to his base before he returns to tag up.
