Following the death of George Floyd, through his Jordan Brand & personally, Michael Jordan has announced a donation of $100 million to fight racial discrimination. These acts of sports stars & public figures for such social causes is a leap forward in the direction of bettering the future of the world we are living in today. This donation of $100 million coming from Michael Jordan and his Jordan Brand will be used over the next 10 years to fight against racial discrimination, social injustice, and making education easily accessible to all. After knowing about the atrocities of a Minneapolis police officer on black man, George Floyd — Jordan had made his mind to extend a helping hand to the cause. This step taken by Jordan would also encourage other top-notch players to come forward.

In an interview, talking about racial discrimination, Jordan said, “We have been beaten down as African Americans for so many years. It sucks your soul. You can’t accept it anymore. This is a tipping point. We need to make a stand. We’ve got to be better as a society regarding race. We haven’t yet figured which vehicles to utilize. But it’s first about making an effort. It’s not just donating money. It’s the act of calling on all of us to take a look at ourselves. That’s an important start.”

Jordan announced this donation to the cause five days after Charlotte Hornets ' statement condemning this brutal killing of the black man, George Floyd came in. Floyd was killed on May 25 after an American police officer knelt on his neck for around 9 minutes. There were three other police officers at the spot when this incident took place. The death of these 43 years old man had triggered unprecedented protests throughout the world, demanding systematic change in the long-standing fight against racial discrimination and taking it to the next level.

For many years, Jordan has been criticized by his colleagues and others for not coming forward and speaking about racial discrimination or social causes. But, from the last few years, after he condemned the racist comments because of which Donald Sterling, the Clippers' owner had to sell the team in 2014, Jordan has been an active member of the group condemning racial inequality. Since then Jordan has always outrightly spoken about such issues and has been all ears about such subjects. After Sterling's incident, he again vocally spoke about the killing of an African American by the police. He was not invited to the White House by President Trump when Jordan made a statement during the national anthem in the fall of 2017. But, he never stopped speaking his mind & heart.

Jordan announced a donation of $100 million for fighting against racial discrimination systematically after the death of the black man George Floyd. This is not the first time that Jordan has donated to a social cause — back in 2017, Jordan contributed $7 billion for Charlotte's underserved communities for building two health clinics. In the same year, Jordan also condemned the “bathroom bill” of North Carolina, which led the All-Star Game out of Charlotte. In addition to this, Jordan also donated $1 million each to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and to the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s Institute for Community-Police Relations. Since he jumped in, to talk objectively in favor of social causes, he never turned back — by supporting the moment, “Black life matters,” Jordan has given wings to those who have been suppressed for years.
