NBA Update: The NBA Set To Announce Their Return

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the games, and tournaments throughout the world are severely affected. Not only that but also the great Olympics have been shifted amongst this Corona chaos. Though the possibilities of life coming back on track are low, yet different federations are deciding to pace up with the lost track.

The NBA's leading body of surprisingly affirmed a proposition for 22 teams to come back to play. This is going to begin at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida on July 31.

The comeback of several games and tournaments are bubbled with hundreds of hypotheses, and one of them is NBA, all set to return. The basketball federation, according to some sources, is undergoing thorough preparations to carve a way for its lost session track. Speculations are that the NBA has decided to resume it’s 2019-20 session after July 31, 2020.

A Brief Summary about NBA:

NBA, National Basketball Association, is the famous Men’s professional basketball league situated in North America. It is composed of 30 teams, 29 from the United States, and 1 from Canada. Founded on 6 June 1946 in New York, it is one of the 4 major professional sports leagues of America and Canada.

USAB (USA Basketball) is recognized as the national governing body by FIBA (International Basketball Federation) and the NBA is an active member of it. As of the current status, NBA players are categorized as the highest-earning athletes regarding annual salary per player. 

The NBA is the merger of two rival organizations, NBL (National Basketball League, 1937), and BAA (Basketball Association of America,1946). In 1976 the NBA absorbed 4 teams from ABA which disbanded thereafter.

NBA membership is divided into two conferences, each with three further divisions. There are 30 aligned teams with each division:

Eastern Conference

  • Atlantic Division: New York Knicks, Raptors, Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto, Philadelphia 76ers

  •  Central Division: Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers

  •  Southeast Division: Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Washington Wizard, Orlando Magic 

Western Conference.

Northwest Division: Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers
Pacific Division: Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, Phoenix Suns 

Southwest Division: Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs

The top-ranking teams engage in a playoff, at the end of each season, for determining the NBA champion, which later claims the World Champion.

The NBA's regular season runs from October to April, where each team plays 82 games, and its playoffs extend to June.

NBA and COVID 19: The 2019-20 session.

Due to the ongoing pandemic throughout the world, uncertainty lies in deciding the year’s session. The 2019-20 NBA session is under a halt since 11th March because of the same. According to sources, the NBA's board of governors approved a competitive format on 4th June to restart the 2019-20 session again. 22 teams will take part in the tentative session which is supposed to start after 31 July 2020. 

This approval of the Board is the first competitive step towards reorganizing the late sessions between this corona pandemic. NBA along with NBPA is working on finalizing a comprehensive session to start the series again.

The following league had its explanations along with the Walt Disney Company about finishing its remaining season at the channel, Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Orlando. 

“Our need keeps on being the well-being and safety of all included, and we are working with public health specialists and the government authorities on a far-reaching set of rules to guarantee that proper medical conventions and assurances are set up,” Bass said in an interview. After all, it is a priority to keep all of their athletes safe.

Expected health precautions:

  • Showering banned at the arenas. Players will shower only at their respective hotel rooms.

  • Spread out rows for sitting of the bench players as well as stands for the inactive players to watch.

  • Guests, till playoff, are not allowed to Orlando.

October 12 is the concluded finale date. 

Hence, to carry out the preparations, the NBA has roughly 2 months for starting the sessions. Moreover, athletes require proper backup to gain their speed back. Work out sessions and proper second training camp will be required at the practice facilities. 


Participants in whatever format for the concluded regular season will further travel to Orlando. Participant quarantine would be done before starting the basketball session again.
