Atlantic Coast Conference Virginia, Maryland, Florida State Florida State will most likely have to win their remaining two regular season games as well as win two or three games in the ACC tournament to get into the tournament. Maryland most likely has to finish strong and win at least one game in the ACC tournament to get in. Virginia is most likely in regardless of what it does. However, it is not so secure that a strong finish would hurt their chances of getting in. Atlantic 10 Temple, Massachusetts, Xavier Temple is most like in by virtue of their 9-5 conference record and 21 overall wins. Xavier could still get in by finishing with a few consecutive wins. Massachusetts is the unknown out of the group. Their best win was just last week against Xavier, but their overall resume doesn't scream NCAA tournament at-large team. They will most likely have some work to do when the conference tournaments get underway. Big East Villanova, Providence, St. John's, Cincinnati Cincinnati is most likely in the tournament if they don't suffer any bad losses and win at least one more game this season. Villanova looks like they are getting in as a 12 seed or as a play-in game candidate. St. John's has faded lately even if they are still 8-8 in conference play. Surprisingly, Providence has played their way onto the bubble. However, they still have a lot to do if they want to be taken seriously as an at-large candidate. Big 10 Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa Minnesota and Illinois are likely going dancing thanks to recent wins over Indiana as well as .500 records in conference play. However, you never know what the selection committee will think about any given team. Therefore, they are not 100 percent locks to be in the field. Iowa needs two more wins to get to 20 for the season. That should put them into the field as well. Big 12 Iowa State, Baylor With their tenth conference win of the year, Oklahoma moves off the bubble and into the field. The good news is that Iowa State only needs another win or two to join the four other teams likely to be invited to the tournament from the Big 12. Baylor most likely needs to win one or possibly two game in the conference tournament to assure itself of a spot. Although, college basketball fans across the country may not be ready for their highlighter yellow uniforms. Mountain West San Diego State, Boise State, Air Force It is almost a certainty that San Diego State and Boise State get in. However, one bad loss could send either team to the NIT. Air Force could be a sleeper team if they make a run to the conference tournament final. Pac-12 Colorado, Stanford, USC, Washington, Arizona State The bubble teams from the Pac-12 are among the most fascinating in the nation. USC is 9-7 in the conference despite being only 14-15 overall. While a sub-.500 team rarely gets at-large consideration, what happens if they go on a run in the Pac-12 tournament? Do they get in over a 20 win Arizona State team even though they have a better conference record? Stanford and Washington have average records although both could have nine or more conference wins. This will be an interesting conference to watch. Southeastern Conference Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, LSU The SEC has been an up and down conference all season long. Two weeks ago, it looked like perhaps only Florida and Missouri were going to be going to the tournament. However, recent winning streaks by Alabama and Tennessee have propelled them both closer to the field. Arkansas is another team that will control its own destiny going forward. Two or three good wins in the next two weeks will send them to the NCAA tournament as well. Although Alabama is 11-5 in league play, they don't have any marquee wins this season. The Best Of The Rest Missouri Valley Conference Wichita State, Creighton Only one team gets in with the automatic bid. Assuming these two teams meet in the conference final, will the MVC get two teams in this season? Conference USA Memphis, Southern Miss. The same situation applies to these two C-USA teams. Some experts are saying that Memphis may not be safe unless they win the conference tournament. West Coast Conference BYU, Santa Clara Don't count either of these teams out of tournament contention. However, there is a good chance that these two teams will battle it out in the NIT instead. By Don Phan: A part-time sports writer and lifelong Chicago sports fan.
