Author: Priyanka Saxena on Jun 09,2020

The coronavirus outbreak had put a semicolon on the 89th season of La Liga in March 2020. And the smiling curves appeared on soccer fan’s faces when the news hit the world with the return of the league. La Liga was first established in 1929, where Barcelona inaugurated the league’s early period with its title win. The Football League System in Spain has many leagues, out of which La Liga sits at the top of the hierarchy. The league has 20 participating teams, which is administered by the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (National Professional Football League).

La Liga is the home of popular names like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Alfredo, Rodriguez, and more that makes the league one of a kind. COVID-19 has changed the world a lot in the past six months and the championship too.

The season began on 16th August 2019 and had to terminate because of the coronavirus outbreak. The discontinuation of the 2019-20 season left the teams with 270 matches played out of 380. This pause continued till 3 months and now the administration has announced its return.

Are Teams Ready for the 2019-20 Season?

The Government’s Department for Sports announced that games will start from 11th of July with a local derby, a good way to heat the fans and their excitement, between Sevilla and Real Betis.

Barcelona will resume the season with its defense against Real Mallorca on 13th June while Real Madrid is ready to host Eibar on 14th June. All of it will happen with no spectators in the stadium.

Real Madrid and Barcelona, have been the best teams so far, not only in the 2019-20 season but since the league was established. In this season, they are fighting with a difference of 2 points, occupying the most home wins in the season among other teams. Even if the outbreak led to the termination of the games, the players like Eden Hazard and Luis Suarez experienced a great advantage. Both of the star players got enough time to recover from their surgeries.

La Liga has its two champions, Barcelona and Real Madrid, ready for the face-offs, carrying a neck and neck fight regarding points and performance for winning the title. With the kick-off in their training sessions, the champions are ready to execute the further 110 matches of the season. In one of the interviews, Messi said that the resuming season will be ‘like starting from scratch.’ So, let’s take a look at what they are up to.

Where FC Barcelona Lies?

Being the last season’s winner and having a record of winning the title 26 times over the years, FC Barcelona isn’t going to make the season easy for other teams in any way.

Coming to the 2019-20 season’s stats, Barcelona has managed 18 wins, 5 losses, and 4 draws in their account while sitting at the top with 58 points.

Moreover, they have played overall 27 matches with a winning percentage of 67% and have scored 63 goals in the season by now.

Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Antoine Griezmann are one of the gems that drive Barcelona, mostly. After recovering from his knee injury, Suarez is all set to put the fields on fire. While Messi who was dealing with his right quadriceps injury has received a green signal from the medical team too and now ready for the upcoming fight against Real Mallorca.

How Real Madrid is Doing?

Real Madrid, just below Barcelona on the 2019-20 season’s list, hasn’t many disappointing stats and is still capable of giving a hard competition to Barcelona or any other teams.

Out of the 27 matches, the team is carrying a decent winning percentage of 59%. Real Madrid has scored 16 wins, 8 draws, and 3 losses in their account. They have hit 49 goals in this season and scored the second position with 56 points.

Irrespective of their current position, Madrid has the most La Liga titles on its name i.e. 33 times. After Ronaldo’s departure, who used to be Madrid’s greatest scorer, things became hard. It is expected that the team may take time to reach new heights of the offense without Cristiano.

But Real Madrid has more gems other than Ronaldo. Some of them are Casemiro, Eden Hazard, Karim Benzema, Dani Caravajal, and more. One of the recent news spotted Eden hitting a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s training session and Eden can be a reason behind the fan’s expectations.
