Real Madrid C.F. defeated Sevilla on Tuesday night to win the UEFA Super Cup 3-2 after extra time. With Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Toni Kroos absent from the squad, Real Madrid won the game and has demonstrated through the pre-season that they are prepared for the fully packed 2016/17 season.
The pre-season was filled with numerous highs for the Spanish club after wins against Bayern Munich and Chelsea and following it up with such an awesome display featuring most of the youth players shows that Zinedine Zidane deserves to be applauded for winning without the core of the team.
Madrid goes into this season as the defending Champions of the UEFA Champions League, a trophy the team would like to defend and make history as the only team to have defended the trophy in the new era.
The team has not won La Liga in four seasons, their last Championship coming way back in 2012 where current Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho held the reigns at the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid Come Into New Season With Many Objectives
Carlo Ancelotti won the double in his first season as head coach and followed it up with successes in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup titles but he was fired after a trophiless campaign and a semi-final elimination from the UEFA Champions League.
Zinedine Zidane knows all about the tradition of the team he is managing amid his time as a star player for the team and anything less than winning either La Liga or the Champions League would not see him as Madrid manager in the seasons ahead.
With young stars coming into the scene performing at high standards, the future of Madrid is decidedly bright because for Madrid to play without two of the three nominated players for the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year and still win shows that the team is gradually preparing to move on without their main stars.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale would join the team for the start of the campaign when Madrid opens up their La Liga against Real Sociedad at the Anoeta on Sunday, August 21.
