USC Trojans are Seeing Redd

After the sanctions imposed upon Penn State by the NCAA, it was only a matter of time before players began transferring and running back Silas Redd is the latest to jump ship.

The irony of the situation is Redd will be leaving a team because of sanctions to join a team that just got off of their Bowl ban and are still in the middle of their scholarship limitation punishment in the USC Trojans. Tuesday afternoon, Redd sent out a heartfelt letter informing everyone that he would be transferring to USC to finish out his college career.

Part of the sanctions allows Redd to transfer without having to sit a year and he will be eligible to play for the Trojans during the 2012 season.

The acquisition of Redd, however, will require to USC to work with their scholarship numbers as they won’t be allowed to exceed the 75 allowable scholarships under their own sanctions. To free up a spot, the Trojans feel that either at least one player will be academically ineligible or a former walk-on would be giving up his scholarship spot. Either way, Coach Lane Kiffin has a plan if he accepted the transfer.

Redd rushed the ball 244 times for 1,241 yards and seven touchdowns for Penn State last season and he will be a compliment to Trojans’ running back Curtis McNeal who ran the ball 145 times for 1,005 yards and six touchdowns of his own.

The depth at running back was a concern for USC who lost converted linebacker Tre Madden to injury in the spring. Redd is expected to get plenty of playing time this season.
