The football fans all across the world are missing the Premier League. But South Korea's K League 1 has started to cover up for its absence. It took off on May 8, making the world of sports lively again. A week after that Bundesliga also resumed, inspiring other countries to begin sports activities as well.
Currently, football fans are focused on these two major leagues, based on the choices and new likings in the play. K League 1 has 12 participating clubs, all of which are on grounds fighting for the title.
Founded in 1983 as the Korean Super League, this is the men's top professional football division belonging to the South Korean football league system. Initially, it had only 5 clubs, but as the popularity of football increased, so did the players and clubs. In 1998, the name was changed to K League which got divided as K League Classic and K League Challenge.
The regular season of the league begins in March, delayed this time due to the pandemic hitting the entire world. The games continue to late March, but there is no fixed structure giving the number of matches.
With the entry of the Gwangju City club in 2010, total clubs became 16. In 2012, the relegation system was introduced in the league. It was decided to have a maximum of 12 teams and the bottom 2 teams were relegated in 2013. Since 2013, only the 12th team is automatically relegated as the number has already decreased.
Out of the clubs contesting the K League 1, the Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors has become the champion a record number of 7 times. This league is followed closely by Asians and many Asian networks broadcast it. The number has increased with other countries canceling or postponing their leagues.
K League began in May, contrary to the usual time of March. The delay has made more people dive with interest in Korean football, as all other major leagues are not an option. We are two weeks down the games, and there is still a lot more look forward to. The stadiums are empty, and fans are not allowed to enter and witness matches.
Even then the team staff and coaches are doing a lot to cheer up the players and keep them motivated. In the Jeonju World Cup Stadium, white and yellow cards with "#CU SOON STAY STRONG" greeted the players on the first game of the season. This match was played between Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in their home ground and Suwon Samsung Bluewings as the visiting team.
The fans are delighted to witness even the broadcasted matches as it has been a long period of waiting for them. Considering the fanaticism of football lovers, some networks in Europe also have purchased the broadcasting rights to give Europeans a taste of Asian football. No matter who is winning or losing, supporters are just happy to see players kick the ball and run around freely.
Three very exciting matches are in the schedule for week 3 of the K League 1. Considering the previous performances and forms of teams and players, it is not easy to predict which way the match will rest. Also, there is bustling energy this season which may make any team overpower the other, regardless of their performance trend.
The game between Sangju Sangmu vs. Gwangju FC will be at the former's home. The home team has no overseas player due to the military limitations but has a very well-trained force of youngsters. However, the injuries of players may work as a negative point for Sangju.
The Gwangju might have an upper hand when it comes to a larger team. But still, the pick is for Sangju Sangmu. Their aggression will not be easy to tackle for the Gwangju. The conclusion of the game could be a draw.
In the second game, Jeonbuk will take over Daegu as the home team. Jeonbuk is undoubtedly the favorite of these two, but Daegu club is not an easy target. Their play is structured and the formations can’t be taken down easily. Jeonbuk will get a tough fight from them. However, the home team might turn out to be more ambitious after their previous win. It will want to maintain a streak and not lose at home.
In the last game of the week between Ulsan Hyundai and Busan IPark, Ulsan has the benefit. They have already scored two wins against prominent teams like Sangju Sangmu and Suwon Bluewings. The blows were harsh on their opponents and it is unlikely that Busan will stop their streak. It might be really difficult for them to stay put in the Ulsan storm. The choice is undoubtedly Ulsan for this game.
