Jets Fire Gregg Williams, the Defensive Coordinator

Author: Suman Pathak on Dec 11,2020

Gregg Williams was fired recently by the Jets for his stunning play call against the Las Vegas Raiders. The defensive coordinator was criticized for his actions by the fans, media, and even by his own players.

It was only a matter of a few seconds and the Jets must have gotten to their first victory and then Gregg called for an all-out blitz against Las Vegas. The 46-yard touchdown pass that was perfectly placed was passed to Henry Ruggs III. He was in the Cover Zero with rookie cornerback Lamar Jackson. It all happened when only five seconds were left for the victory.

The only staff to have been fired on the Adam Joseph Gase list. But it looks like that this is not going to be the last -- the Jets are likely to fire Gase after this season. It is going to be an overall busy season for the Jets which will also include looking for a coach & the No. 1 overall pick.

Jets players Reacting to this whole episode.

The Jets players were in mere shock who a few seconds ago were celebrating the upcoming victory. Marcus Maye, the team captain expressed his dissatisfaction against William saying that in such a situation the defense must have been in a better situation. And, this whole episode led William to lose his job.

For the past two seasons, Williams has been working as the defensive coordinator for the Jets. There have been several such events throughout the 30-year long career of the 62-year-old defensive coordinator. One of those unfortunate events was when Williams was suspended while working for New Orleans for a year. It was for his involvement in the Saints' bounty scandal.

Who will take over Williams?

As of now, there isn’t any clear idea of who is going to take over Williams, the Defense for the 0-12 Jets. Williams was the defensive coordinator for the Jets who are four losses from the 2017 Cleveland Browns and the 2008 Detroit Lions. The Jets have struggled through the seasons, ranking 30th in scoring defense and 29th in total defense. The no-nonsense Williams had dealt with the safety of stars with C.J. Mosley opting out, Jamal Adams being traded, and Avery Williamson, the linebacker dealing with Pittsburgh in the middle of the season.

In addition to that, there were several injuries happening around the team -- with Quincy Wilson & cornerback Pierre Desi not playing as was expected. However, the Jets' defense did what and how it should have done, but Willims’ call ruined it. While given the character of William who is known for taking risks, the decision was not anything new, but it brought uncalled-for consequences for the team that was very close to their victory.

Marcus Maye, the team captain, in a statement said, "We just played the call that the coaches called. We've got to execute, but you've got to help us out at the same time and be in a better call at that spot." Let’s see what’s coming up next!
