The two teams of Liga FPD, namely, Santos de Guapiles and Deportivo Saprissa locked horns with each other on 24th May, 2020 at Estadio Ebal Rodríguez Aguilar. The game had been an important one for both teams with the defending champions Deportivo Saprissa fighting to continue its winning streak and the top position in the scoring card at present.
Noteworthy, out of the 20 games it played this season, Saprissa has secured a winning position in 13 games and lost only 2 games with a total of 44 points earned. On the other hand, Santos de Guapiles has not been having a good performance in this season, and out of 20 games it played; it just was able to win 5 games and lost 10 and was looking forward to securing points and improving its position in the scorecard through this game. As of now, its standing is in the last four Teams in the scoring board with a total of 20 points earned.
The match from the beginning started interestingly with Saprissa going ahead securing its first goal by Alvin Bennett after eight minutes into the game. Thereafter, it doubled the lead in the 43rd minute through a goal by Mariano Nestor Torres. Soon after, Santos de Guapiles secured a goal to go in 2-1 down at the break.
Post break, Santos tied up the match in the 58th minute through Starling Matarrita. Thereafter, almost after 84th minute, Saprissa gained the lead with its players Christian Bolanos and Johan Venegas securing the rest of the two goals for their team clearing the way for a clear win.
Undeniably, Deportivo Saprissa controlled the game and played offensively in the first half forcing the opposing team to stay on their side of the field; but lost control over the game in the second half which enabled the Santos de Guapiles team to make a comeback which continued fighting till the end.
Though Deportivo Saprissa won the match by 4-2 undeniably Santos de Guapiles gave a tough fight, and it was only at the last half an hour of the match that Deportivo Saprissa could secure the final two goals to steer its way to victory.
With this winning match, Deportivo Saprissa maintained its top position in the scoreboard and can play more conservatively in the coming games as they don’t need the win so much now. As for the Santos de Guápiles, it needs to ensure that it wins in the coming games of the Season to secure points and jump up to its position. It is worth mentioning that Santos de Guápiles played fearlessly and confidently and efforts and improvements from their end were seen in this game.
