Alajuelense vs. Saprissa: Costa Rica Liga Tips & Predictions

Author: Mansi

The Costa Rica Liga FBD’s team decided to resume its professional soccer league from 19 May 2020 after a long pause and became the first country in the Americas to kick off its regular seasons again.

One of the largest tournaments in the world, the Liga FPD, was suspended on 15 March 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak. And the clubs returned to the ground on 15 May 2020 to start their training sessions. With the first match’s beginning, Guadalupe found a home win against Limon after the two-month pause.

Meanwhile, Round 20 is on a close with the upcoming battle between Alajuelense and Saprissa, which will be held on 31 May 2020.

The list of competitiveness of both clubs is quite long, and that’s what sets the stage and builds up the curiosity. Alajuelense is one of the two successful clubs, the other one is Herediano, to have never been relegated in their overall career.

However, Saprissa isn’t sitting at the back either, it has appeared in the CONCACAF Champions Cup finals in recent decades.

To justify who can have the upper hand in the playing area, let’s check their career performance and how they have unfolded in the past few matches.

Liga Deportiva Alajuelense Past Records & Titles.

Alajuelense was founded in 1919 and got its first national championship title in 1928. The all-time star player of Costa Rica, Alejandro Morera, has played many times for Alajuelens as a striker.

Other than this, Alajuelense has a long list of wins in 100 years of career including 29 National Championship titles (Liga FPD), have won Costa Rican Cup ten times, 1 time Costa Rican Super Cup, other than claiming many other short championships, and friendly tournaments.

Deportivo SaprissaPast Records & Titles.

Saprissa was founded in 1935 and claimed the national championship for the first time in 1952. Saprissa is also known by their nickname the Purple Monster. Similar to Alajuelense, Deportivo Saprissa also had a great winning history.

Saprissa has won Liga FPD 34 times, 8 times short championships, 8 times Costa Rican Cup, and won CONCACAF Champions’ Cup three times.

The club has also been ranked 106th best team in the world by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics.

The Last Match of Alajuelense.

While the Round 17 gave Alajuelense a win over 3-0 against San Carlos, Grecia mocked Alajuelense with a win of 3-1 in the Round 18.

Grecia took hold of the match from the beginning and gained 1-0 in the first two minutes with the help of José Gabriel. Maintaining a higher score difference is better than scoring a goal in football. But Grecia did a great job on both that day. While holding Alajuelense’s offense until the end of the first half, Grecia maintained the advantage and scored the two marks in the second half.

Meanwhile, Alajuelense's efforts scored 1, thanks to Nicolás, and Grecia made the last goal before the end of the second half.

The Last Match of Saprissa.

Saprissa suppressed its opponent in both of the last rounds. They won 4-2 against Santos DG in Round 17 and 1-0 against Limón in Round 18.

In the last match of Saprissa, they performed great and handled the opponent’s offense well in the second half. Saprissa created the pressure over Limón with a goal within 8 minutes of the match’s beginning and maintained it by blocking their offense, which Limón’s need in the first half.

Prediction for the Alajuelense vs Saprissa Battle.

If we look at the wins, and losses of both of the teams in the past few matches, the scale will weigh both equally or with the unknown minute differences.

Many factors that work on the fields and Alajuelense have experienced one of them, playing under pressure, which pushed it towards a loss against Grecia.

Moreover, Saprissa and Alajuelense both will try to dominate the first half and if somehow Saprissa did it, Alajuelense might face a hard time appearing for the next round.

A draw can help Alajuelense to prove them in the future battles but a loss will drag them down to ten.

We don’t know what Alajuelense has learned from their last loss and if they are capable now to manage the pressure on the fields against Saprissa. However, Alajuelense dominance can turn the tables if we ignore its nature of wasting the valuable chances to score.

So, let the math do the talking and choose Saprissa over Alajuelense.
