Goalkeeper Hope Solo has been suspended from the US Women’s National Soccer team for 30 days.
The suspension comes in the wake of reports from TMZ that Solo was “acting belligerent” towards police while her husband, former Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens, was being arrested for a DUI. Solo was not arrested or detained, but the incident occurred during training camp and Solo did not notify her team.
Solo, the national team leader in shutouts, will be eligible for reinstatement after 30 days. This is not Solo’s first dealings with law enforcement. Earlier this month, a domestic violence case against Solo was dismissed. Solo was accused of beating up her half-sister and 17-year-old nephew. Solo continued to play for US soccer and rack up shutouts while her case was in court.
The team released a statement regarding Solo’s suspension: "During our current National Team camp, Hope made a poor decision that has resulted in a negative impact on U.S. Soccer and her teammates. We feel at this time it is best for her to step away from the team."
Solo took to Twitter to voice her thoughts on the suspension: "I accept and respect the Federation's decision. I apologize for disappointing my teammates, coaches and the Federation who have always supported me. I think it's best for me to take a break, decompress from the stress of the last several months, and come back mentally and physically ready to positively contribute to the team."
