Would Unai Emery Lead PSG to European Glory?

Author: Raphael Minter

Unai Emery has replaced Laurent Blanc as manager of Paris Saint Germain. The former Valencia Boss took Sevilla to three successive Uefa Europa League titles in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Having seen it all with Sevilla, he has joined Paris Saint Germain for a fresh start. With Carlo Ancelotti winning the Ligue 1 in 2013 before leaving for Madrid and Laurent Blanc winning three Ligue 1 titles in succession up to his departure, Emery’s acquisition has only one objective in sight and this is to help crown PSG as the Champions of Europe.

Emery has been lauded by many experts in the game as one of the few managers who buys one or two players to boost the ability of his squad. After winning the Uefa Europa League in 2014, Ivan Rakitic left for FC Barcelona but Emery found a replacement and they soon added two to the one they already won under Rakitic’s captaincy.

Paris Saint Germain has a load of squad but they have suffered four successive quarter final exits in 2013 to Barcelona, 2014 to Chelsea, 2015 to Barcelona and 2016 to Manchester City.

Emery to Aid PSG in Crossing over Quarter Finals of Champions League

Edinson Cavani has the freedom to be the target man for PSG after the contract expiry of Ibrahimovic who has joined Manchester United. Cavani played in a wide position under Laurent Blanc and lost his goal scoring touch, something Unai Emery would look to repair.

In attack, PSG has Lucas Moura and Javier Pastore to provide support to Cavani. With great squad depth and equal abilities of players, Emery has a huge task of psyching Lucas Moura and Javier Pastore to also contribute immensely to the scoring of goals to ease the burden on Cavani.

In midfield, PSG has the greatest assembled talent in terms of intercepting opposing play than any other team in Europe.

With the likes of Matuidi, Veratti, Motta and Rabiot to choose from, Emery has a luxury of stars to intercept opposing play and contribute to attack.

The world’s best defender Thiago Silva and his Brazilian pair David Luis have immense experience in Europe with the latter winning both the Uefa Champions League and the Uefa Europa League with Chelsea.

Aside Emery, Thiago Motta, Maxwell and David Luis have all won medals in European competitions and as a collaborative effort would help transmute that desire on the side to aim them become champions.

With a huge financial backing, Emery has a better chance of adding a Champions League winner’s medal to his portfolio and he couldn’t have had it better than Paris Saint Germain.
