World Wide Technology Championship History

The history of the World Wide Technology Championship dates back to 2007. Back then, Mayakoba was part of the FedEx Cup, and this championship took place as an alternative event in late winters. It used to be played in the same week as the WGC Match Play event. However, later in 2013, the tournament was moved to November.

In 2007, the price of the event was US$3.5 million making it the richest golf tournament in Mexico. Once again, the World Wide Technology Championship offers a larger purse than most tournaments. Along with this, it also provides full FedEx Cup points and a Masters invitation. This is why it is considered one of the finest events by professionals and spectators.
